Research Institutes
Out of 25 research institutes of the National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST), many research institutes are actively doing quantum science and technology research and development projects as follows:
-
Korea Research Institute of Standard and Science (KRISS)
KRISS is the national metrology institute of Korea founded 1975, and has developed measurement standards technology for time, weight, length, light intensity, etc. It is a pioneer of the quantum science and technology research in Korea, and now has a mission of building 50 qubit quantum computer system.
-
Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)
KIST is the oldest national research institute in Korea, founded in 1966 when Korea was yet to be developed, just 13 years after the end of war. It has been the incubator of the nation’s scientific research community. Recently the quantum science and technology became one of its main topics, making it real with the Center for Quantum Information.
-
Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI)
When Korea was still struggling with growing its economy, ETRI took a big role to build up the critical technology for the nation’s telecommunication infrastructure. The big national project to develop the electronic switching system called ‘TDX’ became a monumental starting line for Korea to grow into an IT powerhouse. Now they expect to make another leap forward in quantum science and technology as well.
-
Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI)
One of the main missions of KISTI is the national supercomputing center, with 13.9 TFLOPS Nurion supercomputer, 46th fastest in the world. Quantum computer is expected to be the core computing engine for the massive computation, which drove the institute to the quantum computing research.
